Regarding the climate, in the summer Talkeetna can get a bit toasty. Have some: shorts, sandals and sunblock handy. Pack rain gear for a damp day, and certainly bring some warm clothes just in case the temperature drops or you decide to go flightseeing. Jeans and fleece are always good to have.

For winter travel, boots rated to -20 or colder, down coats with hoods, and well insulated gloves will work wonders. Dressing in layers will help you regulate your body heat.

Gas stations, ATMs and groceries are all nearby. Just be sure to show up with a plan to relax and enjoy your stay. One more thing, don't forget your fishing license!

Our stay at Susitna River Lodge during this year's Iditarod is still one of my fondest memories, not only the beautiful lodge rooms with all the amenities, but it was great fun just talking with our friends around the campfire down on the river. Whenever friends ask about where to stay in Talkeetna there's only one answer: Susitna River Lodge!
